What the Press is saying about us

[Approximate Translation:  The Association of Sebastian Lee Celebrates its First Anniversary!

The Association of Sebastian Lee was created in February 2022, under the initiative of Pascale Marin, an amateur cellist.  She fell under the spell of the works of the German-born French composer Sebastian Lee (1806 – 1887), who is one of the essential composers for teaching and learning to play cello.

The 40 Melodic and Progressive Etudes, opus 31, the 40 Easy Etudes, opus 70, the First Steps for the Young Cellist, opus 101, [and] the 24 Melodic Etudes, opus 131, are still used today all over the world. This non-profit Association’s mission is « the conservation of [musical] heritage in danger of being lost ». The Association’s very first project consists of reconstructing the catalog of works of this composer, as well as documenting his history, through diligent research in libraries around the world.

Committed to the re-issue of his works, the association publishes (under the label « InVictus1 Editions ») scores that have almost disappeared, such as the opus 40 Duets, which have not been published since the 19th century. A very carefully transcribed edition, true to the original, presents the two parts in grand stave/staff format, with an airy layout to help with page turns. Five opuses are already available at attractive prices, allowing as many people as possible to discover these publications.

The association’s inaugural concert took place in May 2022 under the leadership of Valérie Aimard, one of the honorary members of the association alongside others including: Martin Rummel, Sebastian Hartung, Maxim Kozlov, and Cédric Forré. The program notably included 2 duets from opus 40, as well as excerpts from opus 70 with a detailed explanation of the use of the bow that will remain in everyone’s memory!

The association also offers different artistic activities such as a national art competition inspired by the only surviving image of Sebastian Lee found to date.
