Corey Averill
Tous les violoncellistes commencent leur carrière non pas comme solistes, mais comme étudiants, et de bons violoncellistes ne pourraient exister sans de bons instructeurs. À l’âge de 9 ans, Corey Averill annonce à son maître qu’il souhaite devenir professeur de violoncelle lorsqu’il sera grand. Corey a enseigné auprès de la YMA (Jeunes Musiciens et Artistes), ainsi que dans de nombreuses autres organisations. Il joue et enseigne le violoncelle, la basse, le violon et l’alto. Son studio d’enseignement compte actuellement plus de 60 étudiants, âgés de 6 à 85 ans. Il joue également lors de mariages et d’événements, partageant sa passion pour le violoncelle non seulement avec ses élèves mais aussi avec le public. Il a été un membre des orchestres de l’Oregon Ballet et de l’Oregon Opera pendant plus de 25 ans. Il est titulaire d’un Bachelor et d’une maîtrise en musique avec spécialisation en violoncelle et a étudié avec Yo-Yo Ma, Hamilton Cheifetz, Stephanie McDougal, Hans Jørgen Jensen, Carter Brey et le violon avec Dorothy Crow. Plusieurs de ses anciens élèves jouent désormais dans de grands orchestres symphoniques. Partager son amour de la musique avec les gens, jeunes et moins jeunes, est ce qui lui apporte de la joie dans la vie.

Héloïse Baratin, lauréate du concours « Portrait de Sebastian Lee »
Héloïse Baratin, de son vrai nom, est née à Orléans le 2 mai 1983. 3ans après, sa famille emménage en Charente-Maritime. Y ayant vécu 11 années elle y a apprit la danse (école Florence Paumet) ainsi que le dessin et la peinture (Atelier10 de Brigitte Robin). Elle sera lauréate à plusieurs concours de dessin et/ou de peintures. Elle fut Cotée, au profit d’une association, en 1995. À 14 ans, sa famille part vivre en Bretagne et elle se met au chant (chorale de Tanguy Floc’h).
En 2001, sa famille arrive dans le Tarn-Garonne. Elle reprend ses pinceaux et entame une série d’expositions à partir de 2006. Actuellement, elle vit à Moissac et ne cesse d’élargir son genre en proposant toute une palette de tableaux.

Jean-Pierre Berrié (1961-2024), Directeur de l’école de musique de Castelsarrasin, musicien et chef d’orchestre. Il a été un soutien de la première heure à la création de l’association. Son décès en 2024 est une immense perte pour les musiciens et musiciennes de Castelsarrasin et du Tarn-et-Garonne.
Derek de la Bernardie, jeune violoncelliste talentueux qui a accompagné Valérie Aimard sur l’opus 37 de Sebastian Lee lors du 1er concert de l’association en Mai 2022.
Ella Bokor, fondatrice du projet MiniCellos, Fondatrice et organisatrice principale du festival CellEAST, Présidente du Festival-Compétition-Masterclass de l’association culturelle PlaCello, Professeure Associée au Département de Musique de Chambre à l’Université Nationale de Musique de Bucharest, coordinatrice artistique du Centre National de la Jeunesse Artistique Roumaine et professeure de violoncelle au Dinu Lipatti National College of Arts.
Elle est membre fondratrice de l’Ensemble PlaCello, ainsi que du Duo Cello Jaya et du Ludens Piano Trio. Egalement membre de l’Ensemble Violoncellissimo et de l’Orchestre Symphonique National de Roumanie.
Parmi les plus importants programmes et festivals culturels et éducatifs, Ella a été invitée aux suivants: SoNoRo, ICon Arts, SoNoRo Conac, Isa16 – International Summer Academy, Villa Musica, Plovdivn Chamber Music International Festival, George Enescu International Festival, Thessaloniki Music Festival, Meridian Festival, SIMN, Cello Fundamento Vietnam, ConnectArts and SoNoRo Interferenţe.
Possédant une très large expérience, un talent et une passion pour la musique, Ella Bokor est une violoncelliste remarquable et une professeure inspirante apportant des contributions significatives dans le monde du violoncelle et de la musique classique.
Odile Bourin. Après une importante expérience orchestrale : violoncelle-solo à l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, nombreuses tournées avec l’Orchestre de Paris, I Solisti Veneti, La Grande Ecurie et la Chambre du Roy… Sous la direction de chefs prestigieux, Odile Bourin décide de se consacrer à la musique de chambre.
Au Japon, elle fut en 2001, la représentante française du 1er Festival International de Violoncelle de Kobe, et fut invitée par la suite aux rencontres des 1000 violoncelles de Kobe (2001), d’Hiroshima (2010) et de Sendaï (2015).
Par ailleurs, elle a participé à de nombreux enregistrements au service de répertoires méconnus sous la direction d’Armin Jordan au sein du Kammer Ensemble de Paris ou en duo violoncelle et piano ou violoncelle et contrebasse.
Actuellement, elle enseigne à Paris, au conservatoire Erik Satie, et est régulièrement invitée à participer à des jurys ou des master-classes: au Japon, à Kobe, en Italie, à Brescia et Falerone en Argentine, à Buenos Aires, Roquebrune, Toulon.
Elle est l’auteure d’une Méthode de violoncelle (3 volumes) qui fait autorité, d’un Cahier de gammes ainsi que de 2 recueils de Chorals de Bach transcrits pour quatuor de violoncelles (1er et 2nd Cycles), tous publiés par les Editions Henry Lemoine, Paris.
En 2016, elle a breveté un accessoire qui facilite l’apprentissage de la tenue d’archet : la Solution Pédagogique Celizy® www.celizy.com.
Odile Bourin doit ses débuts à Alain Meunier, sa formation au Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris à Philippe Muller et Christophe Coin, son perfectionnement à Anner Bijlsma au Conservatoire Royal de La Haye (Pays-Bas), à Harvey Shapiro à la Juilliard School of Music de New-York et Roland Pidoux.
En juin 2020, elle est nommée Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.
Jean-Jacques Desuraune, infographiste de talent, nous a accompagné dans l’aventure de l’association en proposant ses services pour les mises en page des premières partitions que nous republions. Sa collaboration au projet de réédition nous est précieuse et c’est grâce à lui que nous pouvons présenter de beaux ouvrages à la vente.
Cédric Forré, enseignant artistique et interprète, il est le violoncelliste du quatuor Liger depuis 15 ans. Curieux de toutes les formes d’expressions, il développe de nombreux projets artistiques comme des Ciné-concerts dont il compose la musique.
Il a la grande joie de jouer sur un violoncelle de Jacques Fustier ainsi qu’un violoncelle de Cabasse monté en boyaux.
L’association Sebastian Lee a spécialement apprécié ses enregistrements des 24 études de l’opus 131 captées et montées quotidiennement pendant le premier confinement.

Francis Girard (1921-2023), mélomane et mécène de l’association. Sa générosité à soutenir les différents projets pour la conservation du patrimoine musical en danger d’oubli nous permet de poursuivre les missions de l’association.
Sebastian Hartung est né en 1977 à Düsseldorf (Allemagne) et a commencé le violoncelle à l’âge de 7 ans. Il a gagné plusieurs prix dans différentes compétitions de musique de Chambre en Allemagne, telles que le Alice-Sammter Competition à Berlin, the Competition of German Music Universities à Frankfurt, de même que le International Competition for Ostracized Music à Schwerin.
Après avoir étudié avec Martin Rummel à l’Académie de Musique de Kassel, il part pour Berlin en 2001. Là-bas, il étudie avec Markus Nyikos à l’université des Arts dont il sort diplômé du Konzertexamen en 2006.
Membre du the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra il a tourné en Europe sous la direction de Chefs d’Orchestres tels que Franz Welser-Möst ou Claudio Abbado. Il a également joué avec le Staatskapelle Weimar et l’Orchestra Ensemble à Kanazawa (Japon). En aparllèle de son poste à l’Orchestre Symphonique de Bochum, Sebastian a étudié le violoncelle Baroque Kristin von derGoltz à l’école Hoch pout la Musique et le Spectacle Vivant à Frankfurt. Depuis il a régulièrement été invité à jouer dans différents Festivals de Musiques Anciennes tel que le Festival Handel à Halle, Allemagne.
Sheri Heldstab aime la musique bien composée de presque tous les genres. Elle a commencé à jouer du violoncelle à l’âge de 9 ans, mais les circonstances de sa vie ne lui ont pas permis de continuer à jouer. Pendant 20 ans, elle a dit à son mari qu’à sa retraite, elle jouerait à nouveau du violoncelle. Elle a ensuite hérité d’un violoncelle, a pris sa retraite après 30 ans de carrière en chimie et a recommencé à réapprendre à jouer. Son maître lui fait découvrir les œuvres de Sebastian Lee et, quelques années plus tard, elle découvre l’association Sebastian Lee pour la conservation du patrimoine musical en danger d’oubli. Souhaitant avoir découvert l’Association plus tôt, elle les a contactés et leur a proposé ses services en tant que traductrice. Elle espère que ses traductions aideront beaucoup d’autres violoncellistes à découvrir le génie des compositions de Sebastian Lee.
Igor Kiritchenko, né en Ukraine, il fait ses études à Odessa, Moscou et Paris notamment auprès de Valentin Berlinsky (Quatuor Borodine) et Hatto Beyerle (Quatuor Alban Berg).Lauréat du Concours International de Violoncelle à Belgrade, il devient membre du Quatuor Anton (1989-1995) et remporte avec cet ensemble le Grand Prix au Concours International d’Evian, le Prix du Jury de la Presse Internationale, le Prix Spécial de la SACEM, le Premier Prix au Concours International Chostakovitch à St. Pétersbourg ainsi que le Prix Spécial pour la meilleure interprétation de la musique russe.
Il s’est produit dans les salles les plus prestigieuses: Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Théâtre de la Ville, Salle Gaveau, Herkulessaal (Munich), Salle Verdi (Milan), Barbican Center (Londres), Académie Santa Cécilia (Rome), Metropolitan Art Hall (Tokyo)…
Mstislav Rostropovitch l’a invité à participer au Festival de Prokofiev et Sviatoslav Richter au Festival Soirées de Décembre.
En musique de chambre il s’est produit avec des musiciens de renommée internationale tels que Yuri Bashmet, Gérard Caussé, Philippe Bianconi, E. Naoumov, les Quatuors Borodine, Manfred, Ravel, Debussy.
Membre fondateur du Quatuor Elysée, Trio Alta, Trio Equinox, Juon Project et Trio Arioso, Igor Kiritchenko a enregistré plus d’une vingtaine de disques de même qu’il a participé à de nombreux enregistrements pour la radio et la télévision.

Maxim Kozlov est un musicien né en Russie et naturalisé Américain. Il réside à Eldersburg dans le Maryland (Etats-Unis). Maxim a été Premier violoncelle dans plusieurs formations telles que le Chamber Orchestra Kremlin, et le South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. Il a reçu le second prix du Conservatoire National de Moscou en 1993 et est diplômé du Peabody Institute. En 2001 il participe à la Polyphony of the World en tant que membre du “Kremerata Baltica”. Il a également été membre du très apprécié Monument Piano Trio avec d’autres diplômés du Peabody Conservatory. Après s’être installé dans le Dakota du Sud, il est devenu membre du Dakota String Quartet. Maxim a également accompagné Adam Golka, Paul Sanchez et Alessio Bax entre les années 2011 et 2012 aux Dakota Sky International Piano festivals. Retrouvez sa biographie complète ici.

Mircea Marian, est un membre de l’orchestre de Musique de Chambre de la Radio Roumaine, professeur de violoncelle et de musique de chambre à l‘Université Nationale de Musique de Bucharest, et au Dinu Lipatti National College of Art, membre de l’Ensemble PlaCello, du Duo Cello Jaya, du Larson Trio, du Duo Serafim, de l’Ensemble Violoncellissimo ainsi que du Profile Quartet.
Il est soliste dans différents orchestres de Roumanie et ailleurs, dont le Philharmonisches Orchester Altenburg Gera, le Romanian National Radio Orchestra, le Radio Chamber Orchestra et le University Orchestra de Graz, en Autriche.
Mircea a participé à de nombreux festivals et projets éducatifs tels que le George Enescu International Festival, ICon Arts, SoNoRo International Festival, SoNoRo Interferences, Meridian Festival, IS Potsdamer Innenstadt Festival, Simn Festival, Intrada International Festival, Mozartissimo Festival et le European Music Open Festival.
Il est considéré comme l’un des meilleurs interprètes du répertoire contemporain des pièces musicales pour violoncelle et de musique de chambre Roumains.
En tant que soliste et membre de multiples ensembles de musique de chambre, il a enregistré des CDs et a participé à des enregistrements spéciaux avec le Romanian Radio Broadcasting Company.

Martin a également republié les « 40 études faciles pour le violoncelle avec accompagnement d’un second violoncelle », opus 70 de Sebastian Lee, chez Bärenreiter. Cette nouvelle édition a été republiée d’après la 1ère édition de l’ouvrage de Sebastian Lee, parue en 1855. Martin Rummel a ajouté quelques doigtés, coups d’archet ainsi que quelques indications de liaisons en indiquant ses marques éditoriales afin que les joueurs voient immédiatement les altérations effectuées au texte original. Răzvan Suma est le violoncelle soliste de l’orchestre et des chœurs de la radio roumaine. Professeur de violoncelle, il est titulaire d’un doctorat à l’Université nationale de musique de Bucarest, directeur artistique du festival CellEAST et du projet ICon Arts Transilvania.
Il a mené une brillante carrière internationale de soliste, se produisant dans plus de 2 000 concerts et récitals sur tous les continents, où il a été acclamé par la critique. Avec une discographie remarquable de 15 CD, il est largement reconnu comme l’un des violoncellistes roumains les plus prolifiques et influents de sa génération.
Lauréat des prestigieux concours internationaux « Viotti » (Italie), « Villa de Llanes » (Espagne) et « Markneukirchen » (Allemagne), il a été fréquemment invité tout au long de sa carrière à donner des masterclasses en Espagne, en Italie, en Bulgarie, en Serbie, en Pologne, en Lituanie, en Ukraine, en Corée, en Ouzbékistan et au Kazakhstan.

Depuis 2006, Răzvan Suma promeut activement la musique classique sur les scènes nationales et internationales en tant qu’interprète et organisateur, contribuant de manière significative à l’enrichissement de la vie culturelle et favorisant des collaborations artistiques durables.
Avec la création en 2012 de « Aimez-vous Bach ? », un projet proposé en deux éditions et centré sur le répertoire intemporel du Maître allemand, il a initié une série de voyages thématiques. Chaque année suivante a apporté un nouveau chapitre – « Aimez-vous Brahms ? », « Aimez-vous SCHU/bert/mann ? », « Aimez-vous Beethoven ? » – invitant le public à plonger dans l’univers sonore des grands créateurs de la musique classique.
Răzvan Suma a également produit une série d’enregistrements spéciaux, notamment des contributions aux Archives Golden Sounds de la Société de radiodiffusion roumaine, ainsi que des émissions en direct pour de grandes stations de radio et de télévision telles que RAI Torino, MDR Leipzig, DigiTv, TVR Romania, Radio Berlin, Radio Macao, Radio Sofia, Radio Bucharest et Radio Euskadi.
La tournée « Aimez-vous le violoncelle ? » de 2018 a marqué un tournant important dans son parcours artistique, inspirant la création de l’ensemble PlaCello. Avec Ștefan Cazacu, Ella Bokor et Mircea Marian, il a effectué une tournée nationale, suivie en 2024 de l’enregistrement du CD OVERTURE, approfondissant ainsi sa vision du violoncelle comme une voix profondément expressive et polyvalente dans la musique de chambre.
Jean-Baptiste Susse: J’ai commencé le violoncelle à l’âge de 6 ans avec Bernard BON. J’ai étudié ensuite au Conservatoire National de Région de Dijon dans la classe de Laurent LAGARDE où il a obtenu mon DEM. Je me suis perfectionné auprès de Christian WOLFF, Xavier GAGNEPAIN et Augustin LEFEVRE. J’ai également mon DEM en quatuor à cordes avec le Quatuor MANFRED et en musique de chambre avec Thierry ROSBACH (professeur de piano au CRR de Dijon). J’ai poursuivi ma formation musicale avec l’obtention d’une Licence de Musicologie à la Faculté de Musicologie de Dijon.
Après une dizaine d’années d’enseignement dans diverses écoles de musique de la Côte D’or et intervention au sein des orchestres professionnels de la Région Bourgogne, j’ai choisi en 2007 de changer de voie professionnelle. J’ai repris des études et ai obtenu un Brevet de technicien supérieur en gestion forestière à Besançon puis une licence professionnelle en agroressource et environnement à la faculté de Reims. Je suis depuis 2012 Expert Forestier agréé.
Malgré cette activité professionnelle prenante, j’ai toujours continué d’avoir une activité de musicien amateur plus ou moins intense.
Petra Tamboer, plasticienne, organiste, artiste pluridisciplinaire et diplômée d’Histoire de l’Art, ses créations originales et protéiformes sont unique. Son dessin sur toile à la craie conté lui a valu le prix adulte du meilleur dessin au concours « portrait de Sebastian Lee » en 2022. Retrouvez sa création ici.

Naoki Tsurusaki, né au Japon en 1953, il a été violoncelle solo de l’orchestre de l’Opéra national de Lyon. En 2004 il fait l’enregistrement sur CD de l’intégrale des suites de Bach pendant un concert, ce qui lui vaut des récompenses des revues musicales japonaises.
Il quitte l’Opéra de Lyon en 2011 et s’installe à Tokyo, pour poursuivre sa carrière de concertiste et enseignant. Cette même année, Il fait une série de six récitals à Tokyo dont l’intégrale des sonates de Beethoven, de Fauré, et de Brahms, avec entre autres Ichiro Nodaira, et Akiko Ebi comme pianistes.
Attiré par la composition depuis son enfance, il fait ses études d’harmonie et de composition à l’Université des Beaux-Arts et de la Musique de Tokyo (Geidai). Son catalogue inclus des compositions telles qu’ « Impromptu » pour quatre violoncelles, « Impromptu II » pour violon, deux clarinettes et violoncelle, « Mémoire d’un paysage » pour clarinette et piano, « Deux Ricercare » pour violoncelle seul, « Si, éphémère … » pour violoncelle et piano, ainsi que des mélodies. Il a fait de nombreuses transcriptions, comme les « Variations Goldberg » de Bach pour trio à cordes, « Tableaux d’une exposition » de Moussorgski pour orchestre à cordes, publié chez Zen-On. Egalement chez le même éditeur en 2023, il compose l’accompagnement du deuxième violoncelle et des révisions sur les études de l’opus 31 de Sebastian Lee (disponible chez Schott Music)
Il a étudié le violoncelle et la musique de chambre à l’Université des Beaux-Arts et la Musique de Tokyo (Geidai) puis au CNCMD de Paris, auprès de Reine Flachot, Maurice Gendron, et Maurice Crut.

Pascale Girard, Présidente
Passionnée de musique et de violoncelle, elle est fan de Sebastian Lee et de Nirvana. Après une éducation musicale fugace de 2 ans au Conservatoire de Colombes (92) quand elle avait 12 ans, elle devient en 2001 journaliste musicale spécialisée dans le métal pour les titres Rock Sound et Guitar Parts, puis, désabusée par les rockstars et le « Milieu », elle papillonnera dans différents groupes de rock au succès discrets, tour à tour chanteuse, guitariste, bassiste ou batteuse dans un esprit plutôt « Bérus ». En 2005, elle monte un magazine de musique appelé « String » avec son amie Jade Petit, photographe et journaliste. Puis, en 2010, elle fera une tentative de DJing parallèlement à sa carrière professionnelle lors de son expatriation au Royaume-Uni. Ce sera l’occasion pour elle d’établir un fait indéniable: les musiques électroniques ont également leurs lots de difficultés. Elle attendra 30 ans après la fin du conservatoire avant de reprendre le chemin de l’école en 2019 pour poursuivre son apprentissage du violoncelle avec son Bon Maître Mathieu Moriconi à l’école de Musique de Castelsarrasin (82). C’est ce dernier qui lui fait découvrir les œuvres de Sebastian Lee dont les pièces de musique semblent toutes plus merveilleuse les unes que les autres. En 2022, bien décidés à reconstituer son catalogue et à chasser les opus manquants, Mathieu et Pascale lancent l’association Sebastian Lee pour la conservation du patrimoine musical en danger d’oubli en espérant susciter l’enthousiasme et engager des projets collaboratifs autour des musiques en danger d’oubli.
Mathieu Moriconi, Vice-Président de l’Association Sebastian Lee
Mathieu est violoncelliste, professeur de violoncelle et co-créateur de l’association Sebastian Lee. C’est sous son impulsion que tout commence: en faisant connaître Sebastian Lee à ses élèves et en mettant ses compétences musicales au service de la transcription, de la correction, de l’édition et de la relecture des partitions avant leur impression. Aujourd’hui, il pilote la mission d’encouragement à la pratique du violoncelle seul, en duo ou en ensemble en composant des arrangements à vocation pédagogique, des enregistrements d’œuvres ainsi que des accompagnements pour les élèves.
Marc Sounthavong, VP Trésorier
La rencontre entre Marc et la peinture est aussi bien à son image qu’à celle de la conception de ses toiles, à savoir un parfait contraste offert au stéréotype de l’artiste et au romantisme vendeur dont il est souvent surchargé. Ce sera à l’occasion d’un défi lancé entre amis, lors d’une flânerie dans une galerie marchande, qu’il prendra le pinceau pour achever un premier tableau en lequel le désir d’expression cherchera déjà à captiver par l’impression. Autodidacte assumé, admirateur de maîtres tels que Klimt, Matisse, Mondrian, Miró ou encore Kandinsky, il perfectionnera sa technique au fil des créations et développera une prédilection pour l’aplat de couleurs ainsi qu’un profond attachement aux jeux de contrastes et de reliefs. De l’Amérique du Sud à l’Afrique en passant par les quatre coins de l’Europe, sa vie de nomade lui offrira un panel sensoriel qui alimentera constamment des réflexions favorisées par les pauses qui jalonneront son chemin artistique. Brute, épurée, sa peinture résolument moderne ramène l’observateur à l’essentiel et ne manque pas d’éveiller en lui un sentiment d’absolu. Aujourd’hui fixé en région parisienne, Marc Sounthavong répond avec un enthousiasme inaltérable aux demandes qui lui sont faites, s’évertuant à transposer dans la toile la personnalité comme les affinités d’un amateur certain d’acquérir une œuvre simplement profonde, profondément simple, signée Mano.

Valérie Aimard is a French cellist. A multifaceted artist, she performs Sebastian Lee’s works on her YouTube channel Cello Kids. She began learning the instrument with the composer’s method.

Corey Averill
All cellists start their careers not as soloists, but as students, and good cellists could not exist without good instructors. At the age of 9, Corey Averill announced to his instructor that he wanted to become a cello instructor when he grew up. Corey has instructed at Young Musicians and Artists, as well as numerous other organizations. He plays and teaches cello, bass, violin, and viola. His teaching studio currently has over 60 students, ranging in age from 6 to 85 years old. He also plays at weddings and events, sharing his passion for cello not only with his students but also with the public. He was a member of the Oregon Ballet Orchestra and the Oregon Opera Orchestra for over 25 years. He has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Music with emphasis on cello, and studied with Yo-Yo Ma, Hamilton Cheifetz, Stephanie McDougal, Hans Jørgen Jensen, Carter Brey, and violin with Dorothy Crow. Several of his former students now play in major symphonies and orchestras. Sharing his love of music with people, young and old, is what brings him joy in life.

Jean-Pierre Berrié (1961-2024), Director of the Castelsarrasin Music School, musician and conductor. He was a strong proponent and early supporter of the Sebastian Lee Association and played a significant role in the creation of the organization of it. His death in 2024 was a great loss to the musicians in Catelsarrasin.
Héloïse Baratin was the winner of the “Portrait of Sebastian Lee” competition.
She was born in Orléans on May 2, 1983. Three years later, her family moved to Charente-Maritime. In the 11 years that she lived there, she learned dance (Florence Paumet school) as well as drawing and painting (Atelier10 by Brigitte Robin). She has won several drawing and painting competitions. In 1995, she was listed as the artist (Cotée) for an association. At 14, her family moved to Brittany and she started singing (Tanguy Floc’h choir).
In 2001, her family moved to Tarn-Garonne. She took up her brushes again and began a series of exhibitions starting in 2006. Currently, she lives in Moissac and continues to expand her genre with a wide range of paintings.

Derek de la Bernardie is a talented young cellist who accompanied Valérie Aimard in their performance of various movements from Sebastian Lee’s opus 37 and three etudes and a scale (in harmony) from Lee’s opus 70 at the Association’s first concert in May, 2022.
Ella Bokor is the founder of the MiniCellos Project, Founder and primary organizer of the CellEAST Festival, President of the Festival Competition Masterclass of the PlaCello Cultural Association, Associate Professor at the Department of Chamber Music at the National University of Music in Bucharest (Romania), Artistic Coordinator of the National Art Center for Young Musicians, and Cello Professor at the Dinu Lipatti National College of Arts.
She is also a founding member of the PlaCello Ensemble, as well as the Duo Cello Jaya and the Ludens Piano Trio, and is also a member of the Violoncellissimo Ensemble and the Romanian National Symphony Orchestra.
Among the most well-known cultural and educational programs and festivals, Ella has been invited to perform at: SoNoRo, ICon Arts, SoNoRo Conac, Isa16 – International Summer Academy, Villa Musica, Plovdivn Chamber Music International Festival, George Enescu International Festival, Thessaloniki Music Festival, Meridian Festival, SIMN, Cello Fundamento Vietnam, ConnectArts and SoNoRo Interferenţe.
With a wide range of experience, talent, and passion for music, Ella Bokor is an outstanding cellist and an inspiring teacher making significant contributions to the world of cello and classical music.
Odile Bourin decided to devote herself to chamber music after a prestigious career as a solo cellist at the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, numerous tours with the Orchestre de Paris, I Solisti Veneti, La Grande Ecurie et la Chambre du Roy, and after working under the direction of several accomplished conductors.
In 2001, she was the French representative of the First International Cello Festival of Kobe, Japan, and was subsequently invited to play with 1000 cellos of Kobe (2001), and to play in Hiroshima (2010) and in Sendai (2015).
In addition, she played for numerous recordings of little-known repertoires of cello/piano duets and cello/bass duets under the direction of Armin Jordan with the Kammer Ensemble de Paris.
She currently teaches in Paris at the Erik Satie Conservatory, and is regularly invited to participate as an adjudicator or to perform in master classes in: Kobe, Japan; Brescia and Falerone, Italy; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Roquebrune and Toulon, France.
She is the author of an authoritative Cello Method (in three volumes), a book of Scales, and two collections of Bach Chorales transcribed for cello quartets for student cellists (first and second Conservatory Levels, approximately similar to ABRSM levels 1 – 3, and levels 4 – 5) all published by Éditions Henry Lemoine, Paris.
In 2016, she patented an accessory that facilitates learning to hold a bow: the Celizy® Educational Solution.
Odile Bourin owes her initial success to her instructor Alain Meunier, her training at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris with Philippe Muller and Christophe Coin. She continued her training with Anner Bijlsma at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (Netherlands), with Harvey Shapiro at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, and with Roland Pidoux.In June 2020, she was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. Jean-Jacques Desuraune, Jean-Jacques Desuraune is a talented graphic designer, and has accompanied us in the Association’s endeavors by offering his services for the page layouts of the first Sebastian Lee scores that we brought back into publication. His collaboration with the Association is invaluable to us and it is thanks to him that we can present high-quality and visually appealing publications for sale.
Cédric Forré is an instructor and performer, and has been the cellist of the Quatuor Liger quartet since 2007. Curious about all forms of expression, he has created many musical programs such as Movie-Concerts, using his own compositions.
He is delighted to play on a cello made by Jacques Fustier as well as a cello made by Cabasse strung with gut.
The Sebastian Lee Association particularly appreciates his recordings of the 24 studies of opus 131, which were recorded and edited daily during the first Covid lockdown. You can hear his recordings on his YouTube channel.
Francis Girard (1921-2023) was a music lover and patron of the Sebastian Lee Association. His generosity in supporting various projects for the Association allows us to continue our mission.
Sebastian Hartung was born in 1977 in Düsseldorf, Germany, and started learning cello at the age of 7. He has won several prizes in various chamber music competitions in Germany, such as the Alice-Sammter Competition in Berlin, the Competition of German Music Universities in Frankfurt, as well as the International Ostracized Music Competition in Schwerin, Germany.
After studying with Martin Rummel at the Music Academy in Kassel, he moved to Berlin in 2001, where he studied with Markus Nyikos at the Universität der Künste, graduating with the Konzertexamen in 2006.
As a member of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, he has toured Europe under conductors such as Franz Welser-Möst and Claudio Abbado. He has also played with the Staatskapelle Weimar and the Orchestra Ensemble in Kanazawa, Japan. In addition to his position at the Bochum Symphony Orchestra, he has studied Baroque cello with Kristin von der Goltz at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt. Since then, he has been regularly invited to play at various Early Music Festivals such as the Handel Festival in Halle, Germany.
Sheri Heldstab loves well-composed music of almost any genre. She started playing cello at age 9, but life circumstances did not allow her to continue playing. For 20 years, she told her husband that when she retired, she was going to play cello again. She then inherited a cello, retired from a 30-year career in chemistry, and started to learn to play again. Her instructor introduced her to the works of Sebastian Lee, and a couple of years later, she discovered the Sebastian Lee Association for the Conservation of Musical Heritage in Danger of Being Lost. Wishing that she had found the Association earlier, she reached out to them and offered her services as a translator. She hopes that her translations will help many more cellists discover Sebastian Lee’s genius for composition.
Igor Kiritchenko was born in Ukraine, and studied in Odessa (Ukraine), Moscow and Paris, notably with Valentin Berlinsky (Borodin Quartet) and Hatto Beyerle (Alban Berg Quartet).
Winner of the International Cello Competition in Belgrade, he became a member of the Anton Quatuor quartet (1989-1995), which won the Grand Prize at the Concours International d’Evian competition, the International Press Jury Prize, the SACEM Special Prize, First Prize at the Shostakovich International Competition in St. Petersburg, and the Special Prize for the best interpretation of Russian music.
He has performed in many prestigious venues, including: Théâtre des Champs Elysées; Théâtre de la Ville; Salle Gaveau; Herkulessaal (Munich); Salle Verdi (Milan); Barbican Center (London); Academia Santa Cécilia (Rome); and the Metropolitan Art Hall (Tokyo).
Mstislav Rostropovich invited him to participate in the Prokofiev Festival and Sviatoslav Richter invited him to perform in the Festival Soirées de Décembre.
In chamber music he has performed with internationally renowned musicians such as: Yuri Bashmet, Gérard Caussé, Philippe Bianconi, E. Naoumov, the Borodine Quartet, Manfred Quartet, Ravel Quartet, and Debussy Quartet.

Born in Russia, Maxim Kozlov is a naturalized American citizen. He lives in Eldersburg, Maryland (USA). Maxim has been Principal Cello in several ensembles, including the Moscow Chamber Orchestra and the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. He won Second Prize from the Moscow National Conservatory in 1993, and is a graduate of the Peabody Institute. In 2001, he participated in the Polyphony of the World as a member of the Kremerata Baltica. He was also a member of the highly regarded Monument Piano Trio with other graduates of the Peabody Institute. After settling in South Dakota, he became a member of the Dakota String Quartet. Maxim also accompanied Adam Golka, Paul Sanchez and Alessio Bax between 2011 and 2012 at the Dakota Sky International Piano festivals. Mircea Marian is a member of the Romanian Radio Chamber Music Orchestra, a professor of cello and chamber music at the National University of Music in Bucharest and at the Dinu Lipatti National College of Art, and a member of the ensembles PlaCello, Duo Cello Jaya, Larson Trio, Duo Serafim, Violoncellissimo, and Profile Quartet.
He is a soloist in various orchestras in Romania and abroad, including the Philharmonisches Orchester Altenburg Gera, the Romanian National Radio Orchestra, the Romanian Radio Chamber Orchestra and the University Orchestra of Graz, Austria.
Mircea has participated in numerous festivals and educational projects such as the George Enescu International Festival, ICon Arts, SoNoRo International Festival, SoNoRo Interferences, Meridian Festival, IS Potsdamer Innenstadt Festival, Simn Festival, Intrada International Festival, Mozartissimo Festival and the European Music Open Festival.
He is considered one of the best interpreters of Romanian chamber music and the contemporary repertoire of Romanian cello music. As a soloist and member of multiple chamber music ensembles, he has recorded CDs and participated in special recordings with the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Company.
Martin Rummel is an Austrian cellist. He and Sebastian Hartun (above) recorded Sebastian Lee’s opus 31 and opus 70 together. The recording is available on CD here.
He also republished Sebastian Lee’s opus 70, “40 Easy Etudes for Violoncello with an Accompaniment of a second Violoncello (ad lib.)”. He based this new edition on the first edition of Sebastian Lee’s etudes from 1855; and has sparingly added fingering, bow strokes and slurs indicating them editorially so players can easily identify his editorial changes and additions. Răzvan Suma is the Concert Soloist of the Romanian Radio Orchestras and Choirs, PhD Cello Professor at the National University of Music Bucharest, Artistic Director of the CellEAST Festival and ICon Arts Transilvania project.
He has developed a distinguished international career as a soloist, having performed in over 2,000 concerts and recitals to critical acclaim across all continents. With a remarkable discography of 15 CDs, he is widely recognized as one of the most prolific and influential Romanian cellists of his generation.
A laureate of the prestigious international competitions “Viotti” (Italy), “Villa de Llanes” (Spain), and “Markneukirchen” (Germany), he has been frequently invited throughout his career to teach Masterclasses in Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Serbia, Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, Korea, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

Since 2006, Răzvan Suma has actively promoted classical music on both national and international stages as a performer and organizer, significantly enhancing cultural life and fostering lasting artistic collaborations.
With the 2012 debut of “Do You Like Bach?”, a project offered in two editions centred on the timeless repertoire of the German master, he set in motion a series of thematic journeys. Each subsequent year brought a new chapter—“Do You Like Brahms?”, “Do You Like SCHU/bert/mann?”, “Do You Like Beethoven?”—inviting audiences to step into the sound worlds of the great creators of classical music.
Răzvan Suma has also produced a series of special recordings, including contributions to the Golden Sound Archive of the Romanian Broadcasting Corporation, as well as live broadcasts for major radio and television stations such as RAI Torino, MDR Leipzig, DigiTv, TVR Romania, Radio Berlin, Radio Macao, Radio Sofia, Radio Bucharest and Radio Euskadi.
The 2018 “Do You Like Cello?” tour marked a significant turning point in his artistic journey, inspiring the creation of the PlaCello Ensemble. Together with Ștefan Cazacu, Ella Bokor and Mircea Marian, he completed a national tour, followed by the 2024 recording of the OVERTURE CD, further developing his vision of the cello as a deeply expressive and versatile voice in chamber music.
Jean-Baptiste Susse: I began playing the cello at the age of 6 with Bernard Bon. I then studied at the Dijon Regional Conservatory in Laurent Lagarde‘s class, where I obtained my DEM (Diploma of Musical Studies). I furthered my studies with Christian Wolff, Xavier Gagnepain, and Augustin Lefevre. I also hold a DEM in string quartet with the Manfred Quartet and in chamber music with Thierry Rosbach (piano professor at the Dijon Regional Conservatory). I continued my musical training by earning a Bachelor’s degree in Musicology from the Faculty of Musicology in Dijon.
After ten years of teaching in various music schools in the Côte-d’Or region and performing with professional orchestras in Burgundy, I decided in 2007 to change career paths. I went back to studying and earned a Higher Technician’s Certificate in Forestry Management in Besançon, followed by a professional degree in Agro-resources and Environment from the University of Reims. Since 2012, I have been a Certified Forestry Expert.
Despite this demanding professional life, I have always maintained an active amateur musical activity.
Petra Tamboer is a visual artist, organist, multidisciplinary artist and graduate in Art History. Her original and multifaceted creations are unique. Her drawing of Sebastian Lee using conté crayon on canvas earned her the prize for the best drawing by an adult in the « Sebastian Lee portrait » competition in 2022. Naoki Tsurusaki was born in Japan in 1953. He studied cello and Chamber Music at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music (Geidai) and then at the Paris CNCMD with Reine Flachot, Maurice Gendron, and Maurice Crut. He was the principal cellist of the orchestra of the Opéra national de Lyon. He left the Opéra de Lyon in 2011 and moved to Tokyo to pursue his career as a performer and teacher. That same year, he performed a series of six recitals in Tokyo including the complete sonatas of Beethoven, Fauré, and Brahms, with Ichiro Nodaira and Akiko Ebi as pianists.
Interested in composition since childhood, he studied harmony and composition at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music (Geidai). His catalogue includes compositions such as: “Impromptu” for four cellos; “Impromptu II” for violin, two clarinets and cello; “Memory of a Landscape” for clarinet and piano; “Two Ricercare” for solo cello; “So, Ephemeral…” for cello and piano; and other works. He has made numerous transcriptions, such as Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” for string trio and Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” for string orchestra, published by Zen-On. In 2023, he revised Sebastian Lee’s opus 31, “40 Melodic Progressive Exercises” and composed a cello accompaniment for this revision (published by Zen-On, available from Schott Music).

Pascale Girard, President of the Sebastian Lee Association
Pascale is passionate about music and the cello, and is a fan of Sebastian Lee and the rock band Nirvana. At the age of 12, she had a brief musical education lasting only two years at the Conservatoire de Colombes. In 2001, she became a music journalist specializing in the Metal genre for the titles Rock Sound and Guitar Parts. Disillusioned by rock stars and the general culture of Rock music, she flitted around in different rock groups with moderate success – alternately singer, guitarist, bassist or drummer in a « Punk » spirit. In 2005, she set up a music magazine called « String » with her friend Jade Petit, a photographer and journalist. Then, in 2010, she tried DJ’ing alongside her professional career while working in the United Kingdom. This was the opportunity for her to learn for a fact that electronic music also has its share of difficulties.
Thirty years passed after leaving the Conservatoire before she could return to her cello studies in 2019, studying under Mathieu Moriconi at the Castelsarrasin Music School. He introduced her to the works of Sebastian Lee, whose compositions she enjoys above all others.
In 2022, determined to rebuild Lee’s catalog and find his missing works, she launched the Sebastian Lee Association for the Conservation of Musical Heritage in Danger of Being Forgotten, hoping to generate enthusiasm and engage in collaborative projects for lost or out-of-print musical scores.
Mathieu Moriconi, Vice-President of the Association Sebastian Lee
Mathieu is a cellist, cello teacher, and co-founder of the Sebastian Lee Association. It all began with his initiative: introducing Sebastian Lee to his students and using his musical skills to transcribe, correct, edit, and proofread scores before printing. Today, he leads the mission to encourage the practice of cello solo, in duos, and in ensembles by composing educational arrangements, recording works, and providing accompaniments for students.
Marc Sounthavong, VP Treasurer
The connection between Marc and painting is as much like him as it is like the conception of his paintings – namely a perfect contrast between the stereotype of the artist and the romantic sentimentality with which he is often overwhelmed. A challenge between friends during a stroll in a shopping mall led him to take up the brush and complete his first painting in which the desire for expression was captured by impressionism. Self-taught and an admirer of masters such as Klimt, Matisse, Mondrian, Miró or even Kandinsky, he perfected his technique over the course of his creations and developed a predilection for flat colors, as well as a deep attachment to the play of contrasts and reliefs.
From South America to Africa, passing through the four corners of Europe, his nomadic life has offered him a sensory palette that constantly feeds reflections during the pauses which marked his artistic path. Raw and refined, his resolutely modern painting brings the observer back to the essential and does not fail to awaken a feeling of the absolute.
